| Summary, etc. | La « théâtromanie » généralement imputée au 18e siècle cache un phénomène plus diffus et complexe, où l’intuition que le spectacle est un mode opératoire normal de la vie sociale se conjugue à la tentation de cultiver cette propriété jusqu’à l’extrême que constituerait la « théâtrocratie », fondée sur l’omniprésence du théâtre au sein de l’espace public. Situé à la croisée des pratiques sociales, artistiques, culturelles et intellectuelles, l’univers du spectacle apparaît comme un paradigme susceptible de rendre compte d’une sphère publique en cours de reconfiguration. Cette société en spectacle est donc indéniablement une société de spectacle, c’est-à-dire parfaitement consciente de la dimension structurante du spectacle, dont les dérives mass médiatique de notre époque ne représentent, en définitive, qu’une excroissance. |

| Summary, etc. | Beneath the alleged « theater mania » of eighteenth century France lies a more diffuse and complex phenomenon: a sense of spectacle as normal modus operandi of social life was combined with a temptation to take this principle to extremes, possibly as far as « theatrocracy », whereby theater would completely pervade public space. Spectacle, drawing upon social, artistic, cultural and intellectual practices, appears as a paradigmatic reflection of a sociosphere undergoing a radical reconfiguration. Such a society, being thoroughly spectacularized, undeniably appears to function as a « spectacle society », that is, perfectly aware of the structuring power of spectacle, whose media-driven excesses, in our own time, should be regarded as a mere extension. |
