| Summary, etc. | Grand-mère du futur roi Charles-Albert de Savoie-Carignan, Joséphine de Lorraine Armagnac (1753-1797), épousa Victor Amédée, cousin du roi de Sardaigne et prince de Carignan. Conservés à la Bibliothèque Royale de Turin, ses papiers témoignent d’une femme studieuse, passionnée de philosophie, de littérature et d’histoire, et en même temps très informée de l’évolution des sciences. Ses voyages et sa correspondance lui permirent de cultiver le dialogue avec les représentants des élites italiennes et françaises travaillant dans les humanités et les mathématiques. Ainsi, dans la géographie des Lumières, Joséphine joua un rôle de trait d’union entre la France et l’Italie, avec plusieurs ouvertures à la pensée anglaise.Ses archives, abritant des inédits à l’exception de quelques cas de publication récente, attestent un exercice d’écriture et un effort de cristallisation d’idées et de considérations personnelles, fruit de ses lectures et de ses échanges. Son rôle de princesse l’obligea à travailler dans les coulisses : elle représente donc un exemple de femme des Lumières et de femme auteur invisible et « impubliable », dont le profil érudit et curieux, constamment partagé entre élans du cœur et logiques de la raison, entre compréhension intuitive et approche empirique, reste encore à approfondir. |

| Summary, etc. | Joséphine de Lorraine Armagnac (1753-1797), who married Victor Amédée, cousin of the King of Sardignia and prince de Carignan, was the grandmother of the future king Charles-Albert de Savoie-Carignan. Her papers at the Royal Library of Turin testify to a studious lady, an aficionado of philosophy, literature and history who was at the same time extremely well-informed the development of science. Her travels and correspondence enabled her to cultivate a dialogue with representatives of the Italian and French élites working in the humanities and in mathematics. Thus, in the geography of the Enlightenment, Joséphine played an important role as intermediary between France and Italy, with many openings onto English philosophy.Her archives, unpublished except for some recent samples, deserve to be examined more deeply. They testify to an exercise of writing and an effort at crystallization of ideas as also to personal considerations being the fruits of her reading and of her exchanges. Her rôle of princess obliged her to work behind the scenes : she thus represents an example of an enlightened woman and of a woman author who is invisible and “unpublishable”, and whose erudite and inquiring profile is constantly divided between outbursts of the heart and the logicalities of reason, between intuitive comprehension and an empirical approach. |
