| Summary, etc. | L’essai a pour objectif de fournir une carte historiographique du brigandage méridional postunitaire dans le débat public. L’effondrement du royaume des Deux-Siciles a provoqué la naissance soudaine de récits alternatifs qui devaient contrecarrer la stratégie médiatique du front unitaire italien. En ce sens, différentes interprétations, au cours du xxe siècle, ont récupéré la vulgate légitimiste en l’adaptant à des visions politiques opposées. Les théories socialistes et catholiques réactionnaires convergent, par la suite, dans les révisions historiques de journalistes et d’écrivains qui se servent du « scandale » pour transporter dans le présent le Risorgimento : la phase unitaire est décrite comme le moment déterminant pour le retard de l’Italie du Sud. L’impulsion « néo-méridionaliste » est contrecarrée par les nouvelles publications historiographiques, qui ont eu le mérite de freiner la vague néo-bourbonienne et de poser de nouvelles interprétations, méthodologiquement correctes, à l’intérieur du débat public et politique du Mezzogiorno. |

| Summary, etc. | This essay aims to provide a historiographical map of the discussion on postunitary southern banditry within the public debate. The collapse of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies led to the sudden emergence of alternative narratives that were meant to counter the media strategy of the Italian unitary front. In this sense, and over the course of the twentieth century, various interpretations have recycled the legitimist vulgate and shaped it while using opposing political visions. Socialist and Catholic-reactionary theories subsequently converged to produce a variety of historically revisionist accounts by writers and journalists, who used the “scandal” to bring the Risorgimento into the present : the unitary phase has been described as the decisive moment that informed the backwardness of Southern Italy. This “Neo-meridionalist” impulse is opposed by recent historiographical publications, which have had the merit of holding back the Neo-bourbon wave, thus bringing new, methodologically correct interpretations into the public and political debate around the Mezzogiorno. |
