Summary, etc. | A lors que la France vient de donner la majorité aux partis de gauche, réunis dans la coalition du Front populaire et que le mouvement ouvrier se mobilise, Albert Châtelet, recteur de l’académie de Lille, organise au Havre un congrès pour l’étude des questions relatives à l’organisation de l’enseignement du second degré. Ce congrès, dont il est le grand artisan avec le professeur Marcel Ginat, ouvre ses portes le 31 mai et se poursuit jusqu’au 4 juin 1936. De très nombreuses communications (120) sont présentées qui décrivent des expérimentations réalisées dans les classes ou émettent des propositions théoriques de réformes. L’influence des idées défendues par les mouvements de « l’Éducation nouvelle » mais aussi celle des partisans de l’École unique sont nettes. Si le contexte socio-politique de juin 1936 peut laisser penser à un échec, il faut reconnaître que de nombreuses idées émises lors de ce rassemblement de pédagogues, alimentent ensuite les projets de réformes du ministère Jean Zay, alors qu’Albert Châtelet est aussi devenu le directeur de l’enseignement du Second degré. |

Summary, etc. | Le Havre Congress (May 31st–June 4th 1936) : Albert Châtelet and the Secondary school Reform W hile the French left parties, gathered in the Front Populaire coalition, won a majority, and the working-class movement got organized, Albert Châtelet, the rector of « Académe de Lille » region director of education, helped by Professor Marcel Ginat, set up a congress intended to study secondary school topics. The congress began on May 31st and continued until June 4th 1936. A large number of papers (120) were given, stressing experimentations in classrooms or theoretical proposals for future reforms. The intellectual influence of “L’Education nouvelle” movements but also of advocates of “l’école unique” (a French trend in favour of a more comprehensive schooling) was clearly observed. If the socio-political context in June 1936 could be considered as a failure, numerous ideas spread during the education specialists’congress, were going to feed Minister Jean Zay’s reform plans, while Albert Châtelet also became Deputy Minister for Secondary education. |
