| Summary, etc. | Cet article, issu d’une recherche de terrain en milieu pénitentiaire canadien, analyse les liens qui unissent quatre dimensions principales de l’économie relationnelle en détention: la promotion des droits des détenus, le triptyque sécurité active – leadership – ordre communicationnel, les usages du « risque» en détention, et le système de privilèges. La cohérence stratégique de ces diverses dimensions est reconstituée à l’aide du concept de gouvernementalisation de l’institution, qui permet de saisir la reconfiguration des modes d’exercice du pouvoir en détention consécutive au processus dit de « détotalitarisation» des prisons. Cette approche met ainsi au jour un mode de gestion carcérale « post-disci-plinaire» qui, s’il constitue une inflexion significative du projet punitif décrit par Michel Foucault dans Surveiller et punir, n’en est pas moins révélateur de la justesse des inspirations premières du philosophe: la prison reste le miroir de la liberté moderne et des assujettissements qui s’effectuent en son nom. |

| Summary, etc. | This article is based on a qualitative empirical research conduced in three Canadian penitentiaries. Four significant dimensions of the relational economy in detention are analysed: the promotion of prisoners’ rights, the interrelation between active security, leadership and communicational order, the uses of « risk» in detention, and the prison’s privileges system. The coherence between these different dimensions rests on the concept of governmentalization. This concept allows us to capture the reconfiguration of power resulting from the « detotalitarization» of prison. Such an approach sheds light on a « post-disciplinary» prison model that constitutes a significant shift in the punishment project described by Michel Foucault in Discipline and Punish. The post-disciplinary prison model nevertheless shows the perspicacity and soundness of the philosopher’s initial inspirations: prison endures as the mirror of the subjectification performed in the name of modern freedom. |
