| Summary, etc. | La préparation physique d’un coach, ancien body-builder titré internationalement, rencontré lors d’une compétition, a fait l’objet d’un travail ethnographique. Il permet de suivre de près le quotidien d’une salle de musculation où l’enquêteur intègre progressivement les normes et les valeurs qui organisent la pratique du body-building. Le coach teste constamment l’engagement des novices en les mettant à l’épreuve et en les soumettant à l’impératif de justification. L’épreuve de la diététique amaigrissante prépare les pratiquants à la prise de produits autorisés et les amène peu à peu des déviances positives, liées à la prise de produits plus « lourds ». En jouant de son savoir-faire et de son expérience d’ancien body-builder, le coach prescrit, conseille et vend des produits dont certains sont difficiles à se procurer. Ceux qui adoptent ses préceptes pourront aller au bout du processus pour devenir body-builder. En se convertissant, ils acceptent de transformer leur corps en recourant à la chimie pour, in fine, représenter le travail du coach en l’exposant lors des compétitions. |

| Summary, etc. | The physical preparation of a coach, former internationally awarded bodybuilder whom we met during a competition, was the subject of an ethnographic work. This provided insight into a weight-lifting room’s everyday life, as the researcher progressively integrated the norms and values which govern the practice of bodybuilding. The coach constantly tests the engagement of novices through trials and by submitting them to the imperatives of justification. Phases of thinning dieting prepare the practitioners for the intake of legal substances, and lead them toward positive deviations, with the intake of “heavier” substances. Using his know-how and insider knowledge as a former bodybuilder, the coach prescribes, advises and sells substances, some of which are difficult to obtain. Those who adopt his precepts will be able to complete the path to becoming a bodybuilder. By converting, they accept to transform their body, through the use of chemicals, in order to, in fine, represent the coach’s work by exposing their body during competitions. |
