| Summary, etc. | L’apparition du Mercure galant transforma profondément l’écriture, la circulation et la conservation de la généalogie. Dispositif historiographique central du règne de Louis XIV et ouvrage à la mode capable d’attirer un public nombreux et varié, le périodique diffusa les hauts faits individuels bien plus efficacement que les autres productions généalogiques contemporaines ; il facilita l’accès à la publication imprimée, grâce à sa parution mensuelle et à son appel aux contributions des lectrices et lecteurs d’une part, et parce qu’il mit sur un pied d’égalité les hauts faits militaires et culturels de l’autre ; enfin, sa matérialité assura la conservation à long terme de ces informations, les rendant disponibles pour écrire l’histoire future des familles et du royaume. Dans une France traversée par l’angoisse des contrôles de noblesse, il offrait aux familles une nouvelle façon de se publier, tout en servant la politique de centralisation et de domestication de la noblesse menée par Louis XIV. L’apparition d’un tel support suscita évidemment des résistances fortes, dans le domaine privé comme dans les discours publics, en particulier dans la littérature. Au travers de cette étude de cas, l’article illustre la vivacité et l’urgence des questions médiatiques sous l’Ancien Régime : lorsqu’on intègre le Mercure galant à l’équation, l’on redessine le paysage généalogique et historiographique du siècle de Louis XIV. |

| Summary, etc. | Donneau de Visé’s Mercure galant profoundly transformed the writing, circulation, and conservation of genealogy in France. A vital historiographical tool of the monarchy during the reign of Louis XIV and a fashionable cultural publication capable of attracting a large and variegated public, the Mercure galant disseminated individual achievements far more effectively than other contemporary genealogical publications. The periodical facilitated access to genealogical information, given its monthly publication and call for contributions from readers on the one hand, and because it put the military and cultural achievements of the country on an equal footing, on the other. Its materiality, as a printed book, the long-term preservation of genealogical information, which it made available for the writing of future histories of kin and kingdom. In a France troubled by the powers of the nobility, the Mercure galant offered families a new way of publishing, while ultimately serving Louis XIV’s politics of centralizing and domesticating France’s nobility. The appearance of such a support obviously aroused strong resistance, in both private and public spheres, and especially in literature. By focusing on genealogy in the Mercure galant, this article illustrates the liveliness and urgency of media issues under the Old Regime: taking into account the contributions of the Mercure galant allows us to redraw the genealogical and historiographical landscape of the “Grand siècle.” |
