| Summary, etc. | Les plaintes des envieux s’élèvent du début à la fin des Fables et informent les liens des protagonistes entre eux. À un premier égard, la leçon à tirer d’un tel tableau paraît être de se tenir à l’écart du pouvoir et du public en général, en faisant le choix de la retraite loin des hommes. Prendre au sérieux le portrait que le fabuliste donne de lui-même en « naïf » ouvre à une autre leçon, qui voit dans la naïveté des Fables un style relationnel qui « donne l’avantage » au lecteur. Nécessaire à leur morale, ce style l’est également à leur politique, c’est-à-dire au contrat dénué de jalousie dont les Fables favorisent la mise en place entre leurs lecteurs. |

| Summary, etc. | The complaints of the envious are heard throughout the Fables and inform the links between their protagonists. At first sight, it seems that the lesson to be drawn is that it is better to steer clear of any kind of power or public sphere, and opt to withdraw from the world of men. Another lesson can nonetheless be drawn from these complaints if we give credence to the “naive” portrait of himself given by the fabulist. Naivety then appears as a relational style that “gives the advantage” to readers. Necessary for the morals of the Fables, this style is equally central to their politics; that is to say, the Fables offer readers the chance to engage in a relationship devoid of any jealousy. |
