| Summary, etc. | Les ingrédients nécessaires à l’émergence d’une école de pensée hobbiste circulaient parmi les sympathisants de la pensée de Hobbes tels que Scargill, Rochester, Stillingfleet, Osborne, B.E, ou encore chez certains jeunes gens ayant fait leurs armes dans les milieux universitaires ou les Inns of Court. Néanmoins, en dépit de leur jeunesse ou de leur charisme, ils n’en vinrent pas à être considérés comme des « gentilshommes » en capacité de perpétuer l’héritage hobbesien et de le développer en un système cohérent de pensée hobbiste. On peut y voir la conséquence des critiques et censures des contemporains qui, dans le sillage de Bramhall, avaient prononcé une sorte de « prophétie auto-réalisatrice » quant au danger imminent du hobbisme pour la stabilité sociale. |

| Summary, etc. | Among Hobbes’ sympathizers, such as Rochester, Stillingfleet, Osborne, B.E, and several young people educated in the academic community or the Inns of Court, there circulated the ingredients necessary for the emergence of a Hobbist school of thought. However, despite their young age and charisma, they did not come to be considered the “gentlemen” who could develop Hobbes’ heritage coherently. This was the consequence of contemporary criticism and censorship. Starting with Bramhall, a kind of “self-fulfilling prophecy” was pronounced, aiming at emphasizing the imminent danger of Hobbism for social stability. |
