| Summary, etc. | Le sonnet « Grand Dieu tes jugemens sont remplis d’équité » fut l’un des poèmes les plus commentés et les plus traduits du xviie siècle, mais il fut aussi l’un des textes les plus controversés. Parmi les contemporains, certains le célèbrent pour la qualité du style et l’élan de conversion qui en accompagne l’expression. D’autres lui reprochent au contraire des défauts de style et condamnent les erreurs théologiques qui le sous-tendent. Le sonnet a ainsi fait l’objet de nombreuses corrections sous forme de réécritures. En outre, l’auctorialité de Des Barreaux fut mise en doute. Voltaire attribue le poème à l’abbé de Lavau, certains critiques à Marguerite de Navarre ou Jeanne d’Albret. Cet article envisage la réception du sonnet et les raisons pouvant expliquer son succès. |
