520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Madame de Lafayette seems to pay great attention, in The Princess of Clèves, to narrative virtualities. Indeed, the narrator doesn’t only describe the facts, but also insists, several times, on events that didn’t actually occur, while the characters keep projecting themselves into possible worlds, every time they wish, desire, or regret. This article aims to examine the importance of virtuality in The Princess of Clèves: it first tries to determine its narrative function with the help of what Gerald Prince calls the “disnarrated,” and then endeavors to distinguish between different modes of virtual experience, from euphoric imagination to vertiginous temptation. |
