Summary, etc. The Netherlands’ signing of the Treaty of Rome led it to join European Union cooperation efforts in a region of the world unknown to the Dutch: Africa. Aware of the European programs’ limitations, and wanting to serve its own private-sector interests, the Netherlands, partially distanced itself from the common European policy. This paper examines the relationship between national interests and European aid systems through the lens of Dutch aid to Africa.
