Summary, etc. The Congregation of the Holy Office of the Roman and Universal Inquisition has inscribed even in its very title its dual field of action, which corresponded to the dual nature of the Supreme Pontiff. Conceived and implemented to prevent the spread in Italy of the threat posed by the Reformation, the Inquisition recovered its original aim, and, therefore, its legitimacy, after several decades of decline by imposing itself as the spearhead of opposition to revolutionary “heresy”. From a universal perspective, it participated in the development of a doctrinal response to French ecclesiastical legislation, while contributing, on a local level, to the protection of the Papal States from the Revolutionary contagion by strengthening ecclesiastical control over the circulation of books, and by a renewal of inquisitorial trials. After its suppression by the Roman Republic, the Inquisition was revived with difficulty under the first Restoration, and while its network of courts was increasingly limited, until in 1809, the new abolition was the occasion for a revival of its universal aspirations, which heralded the developments of the nineteenth century.
