520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The coronation of buildings with a row of stepped battlements (crenellations) can be followed up from the sacral and imperial architecture of the Ancient Near East up to the Early Islamic architecture. Within the geographic and chronological distribution of this architectural motif, the buildings of Palmyra take a central position. The article examines the merlons found in the Sanctuary of Bel in Palmyra and provides arguments to revise the previous reconstruction concerning the crenellations crowning the long sides of the Temple of Bel as well as the corner battlements on top of the towers of the cella of the temple.
