520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. A well in Eretria (on the island of Euboea, Greece) has yielded the first bronze statuette of Artemis Ephesia for which we have a precise context of discovery. The best explanation for its presence alongside the bones of infants who died in the perinatal period is that it was a propitiatory offering made by midwives, who though this gift would have placed their activities under the auspices of Artemis, invoked here as a protective divinity for newborns, dead or alive.
