Summary, etc. The aim of this article is to examine the situations and contexts in which the colonial built environment, in other words the architecture and urban environment initiated by Western colonizers between the mid- xixth and mid- xxth Centuries, has become a component of the built cultural heritage. The paper uses examples from the same cultural area, West Africa. The Author defines this urban environment, then sets out to identify the different parties involved in the process, their philosophy and approach, their objectives and the major issues concerning the conservation policies and the problems that face their implementation.
