| Summary, etc. | Hoi An, founded probably towards the end of the xvith Century, very early on attracted merchants from abroad: Portuguese, Dutch, French, and especially Japanese and Chinese. The latter two groups, from the first half of the xviith Century, formed two large communities which greatly contributed to the constitution of what is a unique set of features of urban architecture in Vietnam. This legacy was neglected until relatively recently. However, this heritage has been studied and conserved over the past 20 years, and is highly valued, to the extent that from 1999 it has been on the world heritage list and has become a site frequently visited by tourists, both Vietnamese and from abroad. |
