Cet article présente son histoire familiale et personnelle avant d’inscrire son action dans une histoire collective des engagements féminins. Il tente une mise en perspective des causes profondes de son engagement par rapport à la lecture qui en a été faite par ses contemporains comme après la Révolution. |

| Summary, etc. | Madame Legros was a Parisian woman of the middling class who successfully campaigned for the liberation in 1784 of Latude, a man who had spent more than thirty years in various French jails, under the system of lettres de cachet (permitting imprisonment without trial). This paper sets out her personal and family history before locating her action in the collective context of women’s engagement in public affairs. It suggests a new perspective on the underlying reasons for her campaign, in the light of the way it was interpreted by contemporaries, as well as in later years after the Revolution. |
