| Summary, etc. | “And the desert shall blossom!” This is the motto chosen by Keur Moussa Abbey, which since its creation in 1960 has participated in developing the village of the same name located in a semi-desert region of Senegal. This article describes the monastic economy and the socio-economic actions implemented by the monks to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants of the surrounding area. In particular, the author uses the notion of the “charismatic grapefruit economy” to analyze the success of the orchard’s exploitation, which allowed the inhabitants of Keur Moussa to benefit from direct and indirect income but also to take advantage of the reputation of the monastic production to sell their products. |
