520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. It is important to interrogate the function of a symptom, but also that of a situation, behavior, word, representation, or feeling. It can prove a useful way of working, for instance in a gerontological environment, where words may be missing or may be overwhelmed by actions or emotions. Generally speaking, many symptoms are designed to keep the others at a distance. It particularly affects the people who do not have the necessary psychical processes to regulate the emotions caused by an excessive closeness with others. That is the case with psychotic patients, for whom closeness can give a feeling of psychical intrusion. That is also the case with Alzheimer’s patients who become unable to associate words or thoughts with their feelings. This absence deprives them of the ability to manage flexible relationships. Therefore they have to control relationships with various means, one of which is neutralizing their ability to think of others.
