Summary, etc. For the most part, subjective identity is shaped through contact with others. Thus, the search for identity recognition is one of the fundamental dynamics of interpersonal relationships. This multifaceted search can be derived from a series of identity and territorial « needs » which are likely to be just as many sources of conflicts. This study shows that these conflicts are part of a social and relationship-based context and occur at different levels : 1)the level of protection (of one’s self and one’s territory) and relational defence mechanisms ; 2) at the level of the definition of relationship and personal space ; 3) at the level of social representations linked to the character’s culture (ethnic or family culture, feeling of belonging or referring to a specific group). Conflicts also stem from the individuals’ personal history and life scenarios they have built for themselves, scenarios which lead to only partially satisfactory relationships deemed unavoidable. The diversity and scope of these conflicts lead to the conclusion that, unlike what is commonly thought, identity conflicts are not deviations from interpersonal relationships but rather an « acceptable » outcome much like getting along with others.
