| Summary, etc. | This article falls within the field of cross-cultural psychology of the infant and young child. When disease invades the life of a young mother in Martinique, she finds herself confronted by both medical and social discourse (visible medicine) and popular discourse (invisible medicine), mobilising a dual system of roots for her parenthood. On the invisible side, parenthood is shaped by the iconic character of the doktè fey (or faith healer). This is illustrated by the case study of Karamelle, the 20-month old baby of a depressive mother who in turn has ambivalent relations with her own mother. The aim here is to find common ground between these two world views so as to work toward the same goal of bringing the young mother to become more proficient in her role. |
