520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In this short story by Guy de Maupassant, written in a journalistic style and originally published in Gil Blas, March the 2nd, 1886, the sharp and almost naturalist eye of the author presents a case of infanticide by a servant whose isolation culminates when she gets pregnant from the master’s nephew. Social conditions and wretchedness are leading figures to present the act of infanticide. As suggested in Lydia Liberman Goldenberg’s introduction, Maupassant’s gaze is probably influenced by a famous forensic study from the mid-19th’s century.
