Summary, etc. | This paper examines the factors that prepared the ground for the incorporation of the social sciences into the education and training of architects at the end of the 1960s. This paper addresses the relationship between architecture and the social sciences from the point of view of architects and through one of the major architectural landmarks of the time, namely the International Congresses of Modern Architecture (CIAM) and Team Ten, a group of architects that emerged from this series of congresses after the Second World War. If the social sciences were present from the earliest congresses, the significant changes that took place throughout these eleven meetings are related to how relevant knowledge was incorporated at various levels, the attitudes of architects toward these other disciplines, and the social sciences themselves, which evolved substantially between the 1930s and the 1960s. After analyzing the evolution of the fields these architects called upon, this paper examines the different appropriations and uses of the social sciences by the Team Ten architects. |
