Summary, etc. At the beginning of the 20th?century, the Scottish botanist and biologist, Patrick Geddes (1854-1932) developed a theory and practice of urban and regional projects that was part of the movement that one can retrospectively call proto-ecological, in proposing that ecology should include environmental social and economic aspects at the same time. Geddes worked for a renaturalisation of the city and culture, by passing that which had presided over urban development, that is, the antagonism between local geography and human construction. For each site, natural and human history is the basis of his proposals for change. He walks the city to map and describe it. He takes into account the senses and collects residents’ words. He takes inventory, analyzing the potential of what is already-there, hidden or visible, to understand the city and its direct link with a pre-anthropogenic natural environment. This is woven together with the inhabitants’ cultures that characterize its atmosphere with their stories and trends. Geddes in his Indian work establishes original continuities between what is heritage and his projects.
