Summary, etc. | This article focuses on the significant part played by Tupaia, a high priest from the Society Islands, in the exploration of the Pacific by James Cook on his first circumnavigation. This precursor to Omai got on board the Endeavour in July 1768, and spent almost eighteen months with the crew, serving as guide, interpreter and intermediary between the British explorers and the various indigenous populations encountered, before meeting an untimely death in Batavia on the voyage home to England. |
