| Summary, etc. | Barnett Newman associe ses oeuvres à la mystique juive, qu'il découvre en lisant Gershom Scholem. Dans ses tableaux, la couleur et la lumière expriment le divin. En se référant à la mystique juive, l'artiste honore la mémoire des Juifs pieux de l'Europe centrale assassinés par les hitlériens. Par ailleurs, le peintre est proche du messianisme libertaire et mystique d'intellectuels d'Europe centrale comme Landauer, Benjamin, Bloch et Buber. La spécificité de la mysticité des oeuvres de Newman est définie en la comparant avec celle de trois peintres abstraits : Mondrian, Rothko et Malevitch. |
