Summary, etc. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has led, among other things, to an accelerated timetable for considering Kyiv’s European Union (EU) candidacy. Though the membership criteria are still far from being met, that speeding-up process has revived discussion of the candidacies of, or approaches by, other countries on the eastern periphery of the EU (the Balkans, the Caucasus etc.). This European Chronicle offers an update on the situation with regard to the EU and the countries of the Eastern Partnership (Ukraine, Moldavia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus). After a historical recap (on the beginnings of regional integration with Russia and the EU candidacies of the Balkan countries), Jean-François Drevet outlines scenarios on how these countries may possibly develop beyond the European Neighbourhood Policy, which currently governs their relations with the EU. Who is, or could be, a candidate for EU membership? In what conditions? With these questions in mind, he details the situation of each of these six countries vis-à-vis Brussels and Moscow and assesses the compatibility of that situation with EU entry.
