| Summary, etc. | In studies on the First World War, historians have not paid much attention to the year?1915, which was, however, probably the worst of the war. The notebooks of General Fayolle and General Haig enable us to consider the military problems encountered during that year in a comparative way. The big question is the breakthrough, which Fayolle thinks less and less possible, whereas Haig believes it will be possible at a later time. Fayolle then thinks that the solution to the war should be sought in the East, while Haig is thoroughly opposed to that opinion. Fayolle seems much more obsessed than Haig is by the time factor and the terrible losses sustained. These notes are furthermore a good illustration of the tense relationship between two Allies and of the rather malevolent regard of the British generals toward their French peers. |
