Summary, etc. America’s Armenian foreign policy : sailing uncharted Russian waters and establishing oneself in a strategic region Armenia is not a top priority of the US foreign policy in Eurasia. Nevertheless, from a Washingtonian point of view, a number of specificities, such as its geostrategic position or its influential American diaspora, make this Caucasian republic of special interest to the US. It is also a strategic ally of Russia and it shares good relations with Iran, two countries respectively considered regional competitor and enemy of the US. For these reasons, both Clinton and Bush administrations have shown their interest for Armenia. Bit by bit, they have gained influence in this country. The most notable vectors of this influence are the financial assistance provided each year to Armenia and the military cooperation, particularly via Nato. Therefore the US now have an Armenian «card» in their game, a card they might want to play against Russia, Iran and possibly Turkey, or in any geopolitical recomposition of the region.
