Summary, etc. In the wake of the US, the British Army has been engaged in Afghanistan (2001) then in Iraq (2003-2009). Around 9500 soldiers are still on the Afghan front. The casualties are not negligible, military equipments are getting used up and it is the same about the public support for these operations. Thus, the virtues of a “special relationship” leading the UK to reengage itself on theatres of operations at the East of Suez are contested sometimes. A strategic defence review is ongoing. However, the talks about the French-British military cooperation are not the sign of a great interest for the “European Defence.” Probably, the France and EU’s attraction are overrated. More than a global reorientation of the British policy, a new balance among the main British diplomatic and military commitments could be envisaged with a partnership between NATO and the EU.
