Summary, etc. | In 2016, Donald Trump won the White House with the last-minute support of Republican groups and donors who rallied behind his candidacy. After his defeat in 2020, the former president and his allies have gradually started to build a structure of para-Republican groups that they seek to replace traditional Republican groups, particularly with his financial clout. Armed with “Trump World”, he is moving into the 2022 midterm elections to erase all traces of opposition by supporting “his” candidates and defeating those who refuse to adopt the “America First” agenda. The strategy is paying off: few Republicans dare criticize the former president, or vote “against him” in Congress. Besides, he is using these elections to make his candidacy inevitable in 2024, creating a “Trumpian path” that is increasingly required on all conservative candidates. But in doing so, Trump World is propelling candidates with questionable ideas and personal histories, which could disqualify them in the eyes of moderates and independents in the fall, once the primaries are won, offering some hope to Democrats in an unfavorable environment. |
