Elevé dans la tradition orthodoxe, il verra à l'âge de deux ans sa soeur et son plus grand frère émigrer en France puis le second en Palestine.Son père, tailleur respecté dans la petite bourgeoisie environnante, l'élèvera avec sa dernière soeur dans un certain confort, mettant au premier plan les lois juives et l'étude du talmud.Il nous livre ici une description remarquable et détaillée de la vie d'une communauté juive en Hongrie après la Première Guerre mondiale et leur participation massive à l'effort de guerre, en nous décrivant tant ses désillusions que l'image qu'elle reflète à la population « magyar » non juive. |
