| Summary, etc. | Conceiving of the military system as a “tool” is to deny its capacity to think. This system shows a practical virtue, a political wisdom and a strategic skill. This symbiosis of thinking and action is seen in a pragmatism that unifies theory and practice and irrigates the entire complex political/military system. Military action is collective: it integrates a multitude of local actions at various levels of execution and decision. And these various actions all rely on the same compromise: the intelligence of action is initially that forged by the abilities acquired thanks to discipline and the initiatives that allow subsidiarity, then that which emerges in the face of adversity, which is the force of character and which finds meaning in honour. Breaking the preconceived ideas of the average soldier as a “tool” is also to break with the separation between theory and practice, between the strategist and strategy, between decision maker and executor, between philosopher and soldier. |
