| Summary, etc. | The concept of recovery—offering the prospect of a positive future for those with chronic mental illnesses—is now used widely in France. We emphasize that this refers above all to a process that must be valued and supported by mental health professionals first and foremost. An abundant, primarily Anglophone literature has developed over the past fifteen years, describing changes in practices and services to optimize support for this process. In this article, we present some of the principles that guide these changes: (a) All these studies begin by emphasizing that practices must be guided by the values of recovery, but that we must also be attentive to the individual values of the person, which underlie their life project; (b) to be truly effective, changes in practice must be considered at all levels of organization: individual (in the behavior and attitude of professionals), institutional (in the organization of services), and political; (c) a series of innovative practices that can aid the recovery process should be taught and implemented. Finally, we insist on the notion of “a values-based practice,” illustrating this with the experience of the Paris Clubhouse. |
