520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This comparative article aims to understand how gender, conceived as mode of spatial interaction, is shaped by initiation spaces in the course of sequences of interaction with the non-human world. Such sequences take on different forms according to whether they are meant to shape male or female bodies. These differences concern the relative position of initiation spaces (outside or inside domestic space), the way human bodies enter them (violently from without, or driven from within), how they are transformed in these spaces (by intensive interaction or by slow assimilation), the manner in which they reemerge from them (as intruders from the non-human world or as channels leading to it), and the capacities that the passage though the non-human body-space confers (to wear it outside like a mask or to bear it inside in the manner of a possessing spirit). As at once spatial trajectories and bodily transformations, initiations constitute a condensed phase of the production of gender in more or less polarized forms. While collective, obligatory initiations tend to produce two spatial habitus sharply opposed to each other – one penetrative, the other encompassing –, individual, elective initiations often generate more diffuse or diversified genders. Based on West African materials spanning an area from Guinea to Western Nigeria, this paper explores the gender-producing logics of initiation processes by attending to the diversity of their variants.
