| Summary, etc. | The arc that Hölderlin draws in his work between Christianity and Greece comes to its most important point in the links uniting the last known version of the hymn Patmos and the few lines that begin with the words “Die Bedeutung der Tragödien. . . .” In both texts, the relationship between life and death determines the conception of divinity and therefore the conception of the life itself. In the excerpt of the hymn that commemorates the Last Supper and the Passion, Christ makes contact with the Father in that he accepts his death, as well as death more generally speaking. He appears as essentially different from the Greek gods in that he is mortal, and different from tragic heroes in that he sacrifices himself. Christ indeed knows the meaning of his death, whereas the hero can only experience the fate that operates from the outside. Yet, as we can infer from the few lines dedicated to the “meaning of tragedies,” the tragic death enables a relationship with divinity that Christ’s death does not annul. The opposition between sacrifice and the tragic death is not resolved in any identity or accomplishment in history. Yet, a language that is able to create harmony between both of these figures can give access to the everlasting life of divinity. |
