Summary, etc. | Leibniz uses arguments by way of analogy in a multitude of theoretical realms. According to some commentators, these uses would have to be articulated around the metaphysical concept of expression: in order for an analogy to be valid, it must be founded upon a perceptive and expressive relation of proportionality. This paper instead gives a non-metaphysical interpretation of analogy in Leibniz. In several contexts, it would be neither desirable nor possible to find a metaphysical foundation to analogical comparisons. Besides, the epistemological autonomy of analogy was already recognized in Leibniz’s early works and had consequences until his final years. |
