| Summary, etc. | Chacun des termes « sociolinguistique » et « anthropologie linguistique » suggère une orientation vers des disciplines d’encadrement différentes : la linguistique ou l’anthropologie, selon le cas. Pourtant, nous devons garder en mémoire que durant les quarante voire cinquante dernières années, l’objet de préoccupation scientifique de ces deux « entreprises » a été la plupart du temps le même : la corrélation entre la forme discursive, intermédiaire universel de l’interaction sociale, et le contexte se rapportant à la communication produite. Il est certain que l’accent a été mis sur des aspects différents de cette question centrale, incarnant peut-être une fonction propre à ces deux cadres disciplinaires. Mais il est important de voir l’intérêt croissant que suscitent la sociolinguistique et l’anthropologie linguistique en opposition à certains courants influents de la linguistique et de l’anthropologie, et se résumant à ce que l’on pourrait nommer « le fonctionnalisme sémiotique ». |

| Summary, etc. | Each of the terms “sociolinguistics” and “linguistic anthropology” suggests an orientation to distinct framing disciplines–linguistics or anthropology, as the case may be. Yet what must be kept in mind is that for the last forty or even fifty years, the object of scientific concern of these two enterprises has been for the most part identical: the covariance of discursive form, the universal mediator of social interaction, with the contextual conditions relative to which communication occurs. To be sure, the emphases have differed in respect of one or another aspect of this central fact, perhaps themselves a persistent function of these distinct disciplinary framings. But it is important to see the impetus for the emergence of sociolinguistics/linguistic anthropology in reactive opposition to certain influential trends in both linguistics and anthropology, resulting in a synthesis one might term “semiotic functionalism”. |
