Summary, etc. | The care relationship in intensive care involves three actors: the patient, who is often unconscious, his or her family, and the care team. In this context, the issues of providing relational care through support cannot be separated from those of technical care, which aim at saving the patient’s life. Outside a restricted institutional or forensic context, “unofficial” discursive productions exist, written by carers (patient diaries and letters of condolence), patients, and relatives (thank you letters). These add a new dimension to interactions between the three actors, delimiting a common space of freedom that lies outside the time of intensive care—a time that can be used for storytelling, displaying emotion, and sharing. By shaping the care relationship, these practices make it possible to reconsider the ethics of relational care in intensive care. |
