520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Taking two case studies (Jean-Baptiste Clément’s “La Semaine sanglante,” first printed in 1885, and “J’ai le Cafard,” composed by Alima during the 1975 campaign and occupation of a church in Lyon by sex workers), we develop the idea that singing is a form of expression which, by making use of the words of others, enables political participation. This thesis has implications both for the linguistic theory of illocutionary acts, and for the historical analysis of the events in which songs have played a part.
