Summary, etc. This article looks at how French linguistics conceives of the notion of race in terms of its epistemological definition and theoretical processes. After a review of the history of the close links between race and linguistics in France throughout the nineteenth century and up to the 1920s, the article explains how for most of the twentieth century, for political and ethical reasons, the issue of race disappeared from the sphere of linguistics and became an object of study in a narrower sense, as part of the corpus of racist and anti-racist discourse. Through a study of the terms used to describe the pinky-beige color of human skin in the underwear and make-up sectors (words like chair, peau, and naturel [flesh-colored, skin-tone, and natural]), the article then shows that race is embedded in language in the form of indices of visible difference, and that this is enunciated from within a White perspective. The conclusion drawn from this is that the racial dimension is a necessary aspect of any linguistic discourse analysis that aims to address the lived reality of people in all aspects of their lives.
