Summary, etc. Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) form part of an emerging market of new synthetic products, sold online or in specialist stores. First appearing in the 1970s, there are now more than 160 forms of SCs. SCs are laboratory-produced molecules that mimic the effects of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on brain receptors. These molecules are purely laboratory-made products—formidable synthetic drugs whose nature and concentration vary from one product to another, and even from one batch to another of the same product. Added to herbal smoking blends or to electronic cigarette liquids—sold under names such as Spice, K2, herbal incense, potpourri, or Black Mamba—CSs are sometimes presented as a legal and safe alternative to natural cannabis, which is far from being the case!
