Summary, etc. This paper provides a conceptual outline of the evolution of what the Chinese knew about the outside world. The long-standing idea of tianxa – “below-the-Sky” – represented China as the centre of the world surrounded by yi – the barbarians. The 1840 Opium War shattered this concept. The outsider, who was formerly referred to as yi, became yang – the one from “across-the-Ocean” – and embodied civilization. From then on, the Chinese worldview engaged in a radical transformation.
