Summary, etc. Smallholder vegetable farmers face a choice between organic and conventional production. The criteria used to compare the performance of these farmers include protection of natural resources, health, and profit. A sample of 950 organic and conventional tomato farmers was used as an empirical basis for performance assessment. An analysis of farm accounts and a generalized method of moments approach showed that organic farmers obtained better profits than conventional farmers. Organizational structuring, whether in groups or cooperatives, was found to be a determinant that contribute to the difference in performance between organic and conventional producers.
