Summary, etc. Participatory action research is enjoying renewed interest among development project operators faced with difficulties in adopting innovative approaches. This process, based on social and political experimentation with the stakeholders concerned, enables processes to be evaluated on a regular basis during the course of the action. In this article, we present a participatory action research approach to gender mainstreaming within three rural development project teams in Madagascar. The process evaluation reveals the many obstacles and bottlenecks at different levels, which explain why gender is poorly taken into account, despite international commitments and pressure.
