520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. During the interwar years, German and American doctors and architects developed a new type of hospital based on the principles of rationalized flow management: the functional hospital. This article analyses the beginnings of their construction in the industrializing regions (Latin America, Africa and East Asia) between the 1930s and the early 1970s. It discusses the roles played by international organizations, independent architects, and private firms. It demonstrates that the lack of engagement of international organizations gave free rein to the action of individuals and private companies.
