Summary, etc. | In 2014, a first investigation into Marie Anne Eugénie Renique (24 April 1780 - 31 August 1836) revealed the woman who was Marshal André Masséna’s mistress and companion, possibly for as long as a decade (1801 or 1806 - 1811). With this updated account, the author provides further information on the life of the woman who was known in turn as Mme X, Henriette Leberton, Henriette Renique and attributes an identity to the portrait painted on the woodwork of what is known as the Masséna Boudoir in the former presbytery of Bagneux (Hauts-de-Seine). Contrary to popular belief, the young woman who adorns one of the panels is not the marshal’s companion but Marie Chandellier, owner of the house from 1800 to 1804. |
