Summary, etc. | The old presbytery in Bagneux (Hauts-de-Seine) contains a little-known room called the « Boudoir Masséna ». The walls bear not only imperial-period painting but also the portrait of a young woman presented as the marshal’s mistress. Contemporary accounts and later histories are fragmentary and contradictory as to the identity of this person known variously as ‘Mme X’, ‘Henriette Leberton’, ‘Eugénie Renique’, ‘Henriette Renique’, and ‘Eugénie Menique’. Archival centres and genealogical researchers provided the author with the material required to establish this mistress’ identity and to trace the history of her family and her life, hovering as it did between Imperial glory and the provinces. |
