| Summary, etc. | In 1970, Qaboos became Sultan of Oman after a British-supported coup, aimed primarily at modernizing the country. This modernization policy was known as the “blessed Renaissance” or “Nahda.” Housing policy has been the main tool of this modernization action, and has been carried out by promoting individual homes built on a plot of land granted by the ruler. This policy is the central part of allocating the national oil rent. It also addresses social justice and as such intends to legitimize the royal power. There are similarities with the policy of neighboring countries, but Oman’s policy is unique as it applies to all citizens. This housing policy has allowed the population to have access to modern urban life. However, some questions are being raised regarding social cohesion, as well as the contradiction between urban sprawl and sustainable development. |
